Still a thrill...

Jody Watley is an American singer-songwriter best known for having been one of the flagship members of the group Shalamar, a group which reached its heyday between 1977 and 1985.

She began her artistic career at the age of 14, appearing on Soul Train, in which she quickly became one of the benchmark dancers. And it is precisely on this show that she will be approached to become one of the members of Shalamar.

An absolutely exceptional Shalamar adventure which will see the group reach the heights of glory thanks to several singles of very high caliber. And which above all will allow the young singer to explode in the eyes of the general public from 1977 to 1983, when she left the ship.

We find her from 1984 in England where she will first play luxury choir singers for the group Musical Youth. Then she released two singles under the name of Jody, "Where the boys are" and "Girls night out". Two singles that will go somewhat unnoticed ...

It was not until 1987 and signing with MCA Records that she returned to the race in spectacular fashion with her first solo album which bears only her name, her real name this time around. The album is a real success and will produce the enormous single "Looking for a new love", single which will be a worldwide hit and bring the singer back to the fore in a shattering way.

Album which will sell 4 million copies and produce 4 other major singles, just that, with the singles "Still a thrill", "Don't you want me", "Some kind of lover", and "Most of all".

Incredible success confirmed two years later with the release in 1989 of the album "Larger than life", album which will also sell around 4 million copies and from which will be extracted a new mega hit with the title "Real love”. Album which will produce a second single of planetary class with the title "Friends", title which she interprets in duet with another duo named Eric B & Rakin. Single that will make a milestone as it will open the door to rap lyrics on pop titles, a first at the time.

We find her in the early 90s with the album "Affairs of the heart", album released in 1991 and where she decides to leave her character too polished. An album in which she clearly wanted to talk more about the social problems of the time. A change of course which, to say the least, was counterproductive because the album was not going to achieve the same level of success as its predecessors. And will barely manage to get away with the title "I'm the one you need".

The album "Intimacy" which came out in 1993 will do even worse, but the singer is no more worried than that and proclaims loud and clear that it has at least allowed her to broaden her creative horizon. An album that will also produce only one single of high caliber with the title "Your love keeps working on me".

Two consecutive semi-failures which saw her separate from her record company in 1995 to create her own label Avitone Records. Label with which she released her new album "Affection", an album that would only experience a very limited level of success. Ditto for the album "Flower" which will be released in 1998, album which will save furniture in extremis with the title "Off the hook". A hit single which will be the singer’s last major title.

Other albums would come out later, but the singer would never regain the incredible level of success she enjoyed in the late 1980s ...

To discover or rediscover.

Clips :

1984 ... the enormous Shalamar adventure over, here she goes solo. A daring bet to say the least when we see the success achieved by this group in this incredible adventure ...

1984 ... and a lost bet for the moment because its first two titles will go unnoticed to say the least. If she overestimated her personal potential, it is the future that will tell us ...

1987 ... it will take her 3 years to succeed in correcting the situation and raising her level of motivation to the maximum. A work and a motivation which will boost her in an incredible way and allow her to reach a level of success far beyond her expectations. She simply landed her first personal mega-hit here and definitely entered the musical legend of the 80s this time in her own name. MAS-TER-FUL !

1987 ... difficult, if not impossible, to match the colossal success of the previous title. But the dynamic of top-level success is well in place and it's going to last like that for a few years !

1987 ... 1 mega hit and 2 top hits, just for this year 1987, it's what we call a full box. And which above all proves that she can now stand on her own feet without having to rely on anyone ...

1988 ... the year 1988 will not be able to equal the year 1987 as the bar has been set high but it will come close to it. The singer now unrolls with ease to say the least impressive !

1988 ... in just 2 years she will have shown in a dazzling way that she was not just a simple singing doll in Shalamar. But above all that she was indeed an essential link !

1989 ... we could think that she would never be able to match the incredible year 1987 but it was bad to know her. Because she will succeed in doing even stronger in this year 1989. Yes, yes, it is possible. Starting with this huge new mega hit !

1989 ... this time, it is not 1 mega hit that she will win but 2 in this single year 1989, a real feat ! This is called literally walking on water !

1989 ... and she will even allow herself the luxury of ending this sumptuous year with this top hit. And this time on a much smoother tempo, which allows her to show that she can excel in all areas ...

1990 ... after the end of the 80s which saw her reach incredible heights, the beginning of the 90s will be a little more complicated to manage than expected. With a somewhat plummeting level of success ...

1991 ... production of titles in free fall, just like the level of success in the Charts, it starts to do a lot. Attention danger...

1992 ... business picks up somewhat in 1992, so leaving the road early was narrowly avoided. Hope it lasts ...

1992 ... she delivers us here an absolutely sumptuous Intimist title which will go almost unnoticed. But how was it possible to go in just a few years from a stratospheric level of success to a level of success at the level of daisies ? Incomprehensible...

1993 ... fortunately, she does not demotivate a bit and continues to believe in it. And she is right because business is picking up again thanks to this title. Like what, nothing is ever finished ...

1993 ... it is clear that she will never find again the level of success reached at the end of the 80's but what she continues to deliver largely holds the road. Isn't that the main thing ...?

1994 ... yet another title that will pass 'through'. The air holes are multiplying and it becomes complicated for the singer to succeed in maintaining herself at the highest level, it is clear ...

1995 ... even if she loses more and more ground on the competition, she manages to stay in the middle of the table without too many difficulties. A desire to always believe in it which necessarily forces respect ...

1998 ... she will disappear from radar for almost 3 years but here she is again in a form that we will qualify as certain. Sufficient in any case to give her a new top hit. Top hit which will unfortunately be the last ...

1998 ... as much as the 1980s will have been Dance, the 1990s will have been oriented Intimist. And who would complain when you see the quality of what she continues to deliver ...

2003 ... there it is squarely a air hole of 5 years of which she will be victim. She will attempt the transition to the 2000s but she will unfortunately be more figurative than anything else ...

2006 ... a title which literally floats in the air and which simply feels good. This is also the role of music, simply feels good ...

2007 ... picking up Chic dating from 1978 is a daring bet, to say the least. But its version year 2000 largely holds the road even if it will not be able to match the original ...

2008 ... and the adventure goes on and on. Nothing, and no one, seems able to stop her in her will to move forward, whatever the results. And my faith, who would blame her ...

2009 ... a title full of finesse which comes to close a half-hearted decade but which will have allowed her all the same to continue to exist. And it's not quite over yet ...

2013 ... and yes, here she is again ! Here she is back in ultra Dance mode, an area she had at least neglected the previous decade. Last appearance ? With her, nothing is less certain ...

2020 ... she will have taken the time but here she is back again ! With her nothing is ever finished so we imagine that this title will surely not be the last ...
