Just a gigolo...

David Lee Roth is an American singer best known for having been the oh so charismatic singer of the band 'Van Halen'.

Artist with a more or less eventful youth because of a hyperactive temperament, a mental hyperactivity which will push him to have to be followed by a psychiatrist. And as a teenager having to go to a ranch for troubled teenagers. And it is also in adolescence that he will meet the brothers in college…Eddie and Alex Van Halen.

In the beginning, everyone made music in their corner and it was from the year 1974 that the meeting of the three took place to form 'Van Halen'. Then begins an incredible adventure that will take the three to the height of fame thanks to the release of several albums during the decades that will follow.

This will not prevent the singer from starting a solo career in parallel from the year 1985, which will have the consequence of forcing him to leave 'Van Halen'.

A solo career that got off to a flying start with the release of two very high-caliber singles, "California girls" and "Just a gigolo/I ain't got nobody", two singles that gave him his first planetary top hits.

The following year, his first personal album "Eat 'em and smile" was released in 1986, an album which will confirm hands down that the singer can now exist alone at the highest level. Album which will sell two million copies in the United States alone and which will mainly produce the single "Yankee rose".

New hit single "Just like paradise" the following year in 1987, single that will be found on the album "Skyscraper" which will be released a year later in 1988.

It will be necessary to wait 3 years and the transition to the next decade to see his new album "A little ain't enough", an album less successful than its predecessors. But who will still produce two world-class singles with "A lil' ain't enough" and "Sensible shoes".

Two titles which will be his last major ones because everything that will be released thereafter, whether at the album level or at the singles level, will only meet with a limited level of success...

To discover or rediscover.

Clips :

1985...for his debut outside of any Van Halen shackles, he will smash everything directly with the biggest success of his entire solo career, just that. All thanks to this particularly successful cover of the Beach Boys' flagship title dating from 1965. HU-GE !

1985... the sequel will not be at the same level unfortunately in terms of success in the Charts. As much as the previous title did not go unnoticed, this one will go somewhat under the radar...

1985...definitely, luxury covers benefit him to the highest point given the success achieved by this title. Here he revisits an Austrian tango adapted into English by Irving Caesar and dating from...1929 ! And yes, this title is originally a tango, who would have thought possible...!

1986...the art of going from one extreme to another. Here he rediscovers his Van Halen-style rock fundamentals and at the same time offers himself a notorious first success on a title that is finally original......

1986...the problem with him is that suddenly it works and the next time it's straight down the charts. Sometimes you don't have to try to understand...

1986... so he does in luxury cover again, but this time it won't work as well as before. His revisited version of the title of Marion Montgomery dating from 1963 will not make much noise as they say...

1987 ... return of frank and massive success with this title. We suspected that at some point he was still going to succeed in returning to the front of the stage in one way or another. It's done !

1988...and he relapses directly behind. Definitely, he can't stabilize his solo career and the great successes alternate constantly with the counter-performances. At least on the Charts side because on the qualitative side, we cannot say that these titles are unworthy...

1988...this one will do a little better than its predecessor, but only just. In any case, it will remain as his little 'big' success of the year 1988...

1988...he offers us here a title full of finesse, something rather rare concerning him. It comes from a good feeling, to say the least, but it won't bring him more than that...

1991... suddenly, he will have to wait 3 years before succeeding in warding off fate. A year 1991 which will be most favorable to him starting with this title...

1991... two hits, one after the other, it hadn't happened to him for a long time, that's for the good news. The bad news is that it will indeed be the last time this will happen to him...

1991... major successes will therefore become increasingly rare and the artist will now do more some figuration than anything else. Hard law of the trade...

1994...he will save the furniture with this title but that will not allow him in any case to pick up with the front runners. The best years are now behind, it is clear...

1994...another nice title that won't bring him back again. Each time he has dared to venture into the 'emotional' register, the result in the Charts will have been most disappointing...

1997...and it is not overspeeding that risks reversing the trend. It is clear that he is not likely to attract the younger generation with this kind of title...

1998...and what about this one ! A musical style which in no way corresponds to the latest standards in vogue and which de facto marginalizes him. Strange strategy on his part...

2003... that will not prevent him from trying to move on to the next decade. A desire to believe in it until the end which commands respect incontestably...

2003...the only problem is that the musical world has evolved considerably around him and he doesn't take it into account. Hence the repeated underperformance...

2020... we will lose sight of him for almost 17 years and here he is back in a form that we will call relative. In any case, not enough to bring him to the surface...

2021... he only does what he likes without taking into account the real expectations of the general public at the start of the 2020 decade. Frankly, a shame....

2021...we imagine that this title will not be the last. It remains to be seen in what frame of mind and especially musical he will come back to us next time...
