The Gioconda smile...

Not much info about Poésie Noire except the fact that it's a Belgian group formed in 1984 and composed mainly of Johan Casters, Marianne Valvekens and Herman Gillis.

A group that will remain mainly in the musical history of the 1980s for the high-caliber single "Oblivion" released in 1989.

As such alone, we had to devote this article to them.

To discover or rediscover.

Clips :

1985 ... oh these dear Belgians. Always this unique style which will have been as much their strength as their weakness during this decade ...

1985 ... too bad because there was really talent in most of the Belgian bands of the time. But their somewhat hermetic style will have marginalized them de facto among the general public ...

1986 ... whatever their level of success in the Charts, nothing will have stopped them from moving forward. Afterwards, rightly or wrongly, that's something else ...

1987 ... it is clear that with such a 'marked' style, they are unlikely to compete with Sabrina or Samantha Fox. Afterwards, it's all about taste ...

1987 ... it is the 'dark side' that interests them, it is clear. We are close to caricature but that's also the 80s !

1988 ... a truly unique 'Belgium Touch' which will forever be the trademark of this country. We won't do them again …

1989 ... even when they slow down the tempo a bit, that doesn't change the somewhat hermetic side of their style. Not easy to finish N°1 of the Charts under these conditions ...

1989 ... it's THIS title that will set them apart from the crowd. In this case we are still not talking about mass success, far from it. But with a semblance of recognition, that's already it ...

1989 ... they continue their adventure slowly but surely. Without really taking into account the latest musical developments of the moment. Very very risky bet ...

1990 ... they will even attempt the transition to the 90s. But what worked only moderately during the 80s is not likely to work more than that during the following decade ...

1991 ... an adventure to say the least singular and which ends with this title. There was potential but their somewhat austere musical orientation served them more than anything else ...
